it is probably already a well known fact on this blog that i love farmers markets. so when i found out i would be living just blocks from one of the biggest farmers markets in nice, i was over the moon. i walk through the market almost daily to get to class but i only just recently got to properly visit and shop. it’s so interesting how different farmers markets are in france than the ones i’m used to back home. in america, they seem like an event. things seem much more staged and more attention is paid to aesthetics and detail. here, they are apart of life. they are much more pedestrian and gritty and feel more natural. i’ve been told this is probably because the market i shop at is the ‘locals market’. the farmers market more geared towards tourists, the famous Cours Saleya, is more organized and visually pleasing but also more expensive. another thing i was surprised at was the lack of variety. it seems like almost every vender sells the same things! and very few booths are organic (or if they are they don’t advertise it). i did find a bio (organic) vender who is very kind and has very good prices so when i do shop at the market, thats my first stop. afterwards, i’ll pick up flowers or hunt for other things i need or just people watch and enjoy the sights and sounds and colors of the market.
today i picked up these beauties on my walk back from class. i saw them and fell in love but i decided not to buy them because i didn’t see a price and flowers at the market can get pretty pricey. i kept on walking but i had that feeling you get when you know you are going to regret something. i looked at the flowers at a few more stalls, thinking maybe those would suffice but none compared. i knew i had to go back and get those flowers. so i turned back around and tried to recall where that vender was. when i arrived, the stall was closing up so i got there just in time and to my surprise, they were only 2€ a bundle! i got two bundles and because the vender was closing for the day, he gave me a bundle for free! i walked back to my apartment with a huge bouquet and an even bigger smile and people were smiling at me because they probably thought i was in love! and i was… with my pretty flowers! so now i have flowers all over my room (the bouquet pictured is only a third of them!) and the resolution to buy flowers from the marché more often.
i always love a good farmers market and its especially fun to find them while traveling. its fascinating to see how much the selection can vary from place to place and from time to time and i enjoy trying new things. this farmers market was particularly unusual because it was on the beach, had a beautiful wildflower selection (we bought a bundle for our hotel room) and had an adorable little family folk band. though it was small, the produce was good and the ambiance was one of a kind. this is definitely a farmers market i would like to visit again.
yet another trip to the santa monica farmers market! after visiting some disappointing farmers markets in new zealand (no organic produce and very limited fruits and veggies), i was looking forward to this market visit for quite some time! though the winter market is nice, i love the colors and selection of the summer market. everything is so inspiring and so beautiful! i think my best buy of the day was a few bunches of lavender that i plan on hanging to dry so i can put them around my room. nothing beats a good market day.
when i’m home, the santa monica farmers market is always a must! i usually visit often in the summer but this was my first time going in the winter. i was pleasantly surprised at the wide variety of produce and i actually like it better this time of year because of the many vegetables, especially squash and carrots. it was also less crowded which is always a plus. do you have a local farmers market you frequent?
i love farmers markets because they make for a wonderful combination of organic, locally grown food and beautiful flowers. the farmers market on wednesdays in santa monica is truly one of my favorite things about la. so much so that i’ve made over an hour and a half long trips just to go there. it is one of the biggest markets i’ve been to and on top of that, its great for people watching. you can always see chefs buying for their restaurants, florists with bundles of flowers and people with yoga mats grabbing produce after class. we found some yummy treats (post coming tomorrow) but the best part is experience walking around and seeing all the interesting and unusual foods, plants and other goodies. oh how i wish it was closer to home.
