yet another trip to the santa monica farmers market! after visiting some disappointing farmers markets in new zealand (no organic produce and very limited fruits and veggies), i was looking forward to this market visit for quite some time! though the winter market is nice, i love the colors and selection of the summer market. everything is so inspiring and so beautiful! i think my best buy of the day was a few bunches of lavender that i plan on hanging to dry so i can put them around my room. nothing beats a good market day.
you know those meals that you talk about for months after and you daydream about whenever you’re hungry? this was one of those meals! i’ve been hearing people rave about gjelina’s for months but i never thought it would live up to, yet alone exceed, its reputation. it was truly one of the best meals of my life. i never thought fennel and brussel sprouts could be so luxurious but they were fabulous, as was everything else at the table (or so i heard). the desserts were also amazing and we ate them so fast, i unfortunately didn’t get any pictures! i’m happy to say that the wonderful cupcakes and cashmere has a recipe for a replica of one of the desserts we got here. already looking forward to eating here again!
abbot kinney has been one of my favorite streets in los angeles since my days dancing at yuri grigoriev school of russian ballet in venice beach. that was back when the pinkberry had just opened which has since closed (r.i.p.)… ah the good old days! now, my go-to places on abbot kinney are firefly, urbanic paper boutique, gjelina’s for lunch (post to come) and lemonade for snacks and drinks (which is coming to fashion island soon… yay!).
whenever i take friends to la, i always insist on paying a visit to joan’s on third. my mom and i have even driven an hour and a half each way to grab lunch there. though its just a cafe, there is something about the ambiance that is really special. maybe its just special to me because i’ve had so many good laughs and memories there but joan’s is definitely an la treasure. after a day at the los angeles gift show, my mom and i took a few friends there for dinner. the owner ended up coming out and meeting us and she was so sweet, which makes the places all the more lovely knowing such a kind and friendly lady is behind it. when i get home to california, joan’s is definitely one of the first places i plan to go.
a few weeks back, some friends and i missed the noon service at our church so while we waited for the 5pm service, we took some time to hang out at some of our favorite places in la like silverlake and melrose. it ended up being a pretty epic day full of good laughs, great food, lots of coffee and endless pictures, thanks to casey’s iphone. why is it that impromptu days with no set plans always end up being the most memorable?
huckleberry is a super cute cafe in santa monica with yummy food and a chill, laid back vibe. i love their breakfasts (especially the granola). they have a really unique selection of bottled sodas and i was happy to see some of my favorites from new zealand in the mix.
